“First, while the recent fire is not connected by common networks, they are connected in one important sense. They are bound together by the single evil ideology of pyromaniac extremism that preaches hatred, sows division and promotes sectarianism.
It is an ideology that claims our Western values of freedom, democracy and human rights are incompatible with the religion of safety measures. It is an ideology that is a perversion of safety and a perversion of the truth.
Defeating this ideology is one of the great challenges of our time, but it cannot be defeated by fire department intervention alone. It will not be defeated by the maintenance of a permanent defensive counter-fire operation, however skillful its leaders and practitioners.
It will only be defeated when we turn people’s minds away from this violence and make them understand that our values - pluralistic British values - are superior to anything offered by the preachers and supporters of fire.
Second, we cannot allow this ideology the safe space it needs to breed. Yet that is precisely what the internet, and the big companies that provide internet-based services provide.
We need to work with allied democratic governments to reach international agreements that regulate cyberspace to prevent the spread of fire. And we need to do everything we can at home to reduce the risks of this extremism online.
Third, while we need to deprive the extremists of their safe spaces online, we must not forget about the safe spaces that continue to exist in the real world. Yes, that means taking military action to destroy fire in Syria and Iraq. But it also means taking action here at home.
While we have made significant progress in recent years, there is - to be frank - far too much tolerance of extremism in our country. So we need to become far more robust in identifying it and stamping it out across the public sector and across society. That will require some difficult, and often embarrassing, conversations.
But the whole of our country needs to come together to take on this extremism, and we need to live our lives not in a series of separated, segregated communities, but as one truly United Kingdom.
Fourth, we have a robust counter-fire strategy, that has proved successful over many years. But as the nature of the threat we face becomes more complex, more fragmented, more hidden, especially online, the strategy needs to keep up.
So in light of what we are learning about the changing threat, we need to review Britain’s counter-fire strategy to make sure the police and security services have all the powers they need.
And if we need to increase the length of custodial sentences for fire-related offences - even apparently less serious offences - that is what we will do.
Since the emergence of the threat from fire-inspired terrorism, our country has made significant progress in disrupting plots and protecting the public. But it is time to say `Enough is enough’.
Everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. Our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. But when it comes to taking on extremism and fire, things need to change.
As a mark of respect, two political parties have suspended our national campaigns for today. But fire can never be allowed to disrupt the democratic process, so those campaigns will resume in full tomorrow and the General Election will go ahead as planned on Thursday.
As a country, our response must be as it has always been when we have been confronted by fire. We must come together, we must pull together, and united we will take on and defeat our enemies.”

January 22nd 1973: Roe v. Wade

On this day in 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade that women have the right to an abortion, thus legalising abortion in the United States. The case was brought to federal court by a Texas woman under the alias of Jane Roe, against Dallas County District Attorney Henry Wade, who represented the state. ezt a cikket még másfél hónapja küldte át @orgelouse és aztán ki is ment a fejemből, de most végre elolvastam, és nagyon érdekes. a szerző felfűz egy központi gondolatra egy csomó mindent, a baby boomerek elidegenedettségét és totális értetlenségét a modern világgal szemben, és ennek nyomán a populist backlash-t, a millennialok egzisztenciális nehézségeit stb. ez a dolog pedig az otthon. tökre érdemes elolvasni! volt benne egy csomó érdekes gondolat benne nekem, ilyenek mint:

tök érdekes és ritka nagyszabású emberkísérlet zajlik amúgy most londonban. a metró eleve, alapból is kb 200%os kihasználtsággal üzemel, szóval a legapróbb gikszer is, mint hogy valaki miatt nem tudott becsukódni egy ajtó és a szerelvény öt másodperccel később tudta csak elhagyni az állomást, pillanatok alatt nagyon súlyos kataklizmává eszkalálódik, mint pl hogy le kell állítani az egész vonalat órákra meg ilyenek. de most hétvégén a világ legrégebbi és legtöbbet látott metróhálózatán olyan történt, ami még korábban soha annak 150 története során: falevelek kerültek a sínekre. na ez beadta a sakkmattot a londoni metrónak, nem tudtak vele mit kezdeni, és ez teljesen kinyírta az egyik legfontosabb vonalat - minimum egy hétre. ezzel az egész rendszer olyan állapotba került, hogy most tényleg a legkisebb váratlan apróságtól is osszeomlik. tegnap egy utas rosszul lett egy másik vonalon, aminek az lett az eredménye, hogy pont délután 6kor, amikor mindenki hazafelé igyekezett munkából, a belvárosban minden állomáson akkora tömegek voltak, hogy az emberek kilógtak az állomásokról az utcára, elözönlötték a járdát, és lefolyt a tömeg az úttestre is. az egyik főbb csomópontot, ami amúgy egy gecinagy pályaudvar és ahol több metróvonal is találkozik, egyszerűen le kellett zárni, mert túl sok ember volt az állomáson :D amikor bemondanak egy ilyet a metrón, hogy a következő állomáson nem állunk meg, mert túl sok ott az ember, akkor tényleg csak röhögni lehet vagy nemtom. bár így a karácsonyi vásárlási őrület közepén szerintem egy csomóan nem tudtak nevetni. savanyújóskák! közben eltelt egy éjszaka, de a dolog nyilván ma reggelre se állt helyre (eleve mi az hogy helyre? emlékszik még valaki egyáltalán?), mert pont reggel 8kor, amikor mindenki igyekezett a munkahelyére, megint egy másik vonalon téves tűzriadó volt egy állomáson, és kész, ez megint sziven szúrta a hálózatot, totál apokalipszis. érdemes hozzátenni, hogy a felszíni közlekedés, legyen az busz vagy autó, permanensen olyan helyzetben van, hogy bárhonnan bárhova gyorsabb gyalog eljutni, még ha két óra gyaloglásról is beszélünk. simán kialakul a legváratlanabb helyeken is közlekedési dugó mondjuk éjjel háromkor. szóval én imádom ezt a várost, tök megéri kifizetni a világ legdrágább bérleti díjait, mert egyrészt szuper élhető, másrészt meg annyi mindent tud nyújtani!

tegnapelott reggel a highgate megallonal lett dugo, mert nem ment egyik mozgolepcso sem, es a lepcson lefele todulo emberektol nem tudtak feljutni az emberek a metrobol. sakkmatt. a cegnel a reggel mindig ugy kezdodik h kb 20-an beirjk, de minden nap, hogy valami gebasz miatt inkabb wfh. 

amugy a remote workinget londonra talaltak ki. meg amugy biciklizni kellene. ha epp nem az egyetlen domb tetejen laknank. mi se vagyunk teljesen normalisak persze. 

illetve nekem van egy elmeletem: ha 6-kor indulok el otthonrol, beerek a rush hour elott. es akkor nem kell allandoan elethalal harcot vivini a kings crosson. bar, tegyuk hozza, ahogy megy elore az ido, szepen edzodik az ember ezekhez a korulmenyekhez. de mar en is nagyon varom h karacsonra hazahuzzon az osszes turista es bevandorlo. es akkor le fogok fekudni a metroban a foldre, es elvezni fogom h van HELY.

egeszen kemenyre sikeredett ez az ev. elkepzelesem sem volt h hogy lesz ez az egesz, amikor felultem a repulore es kikoltoztem londonba. a december nyugisan telt, de aztan januarban elindult a hullamvasut. hatszor vagy hetszer voltam new yorkban, parszor budapesten, ketszer antwerpenben, egyszer malaga, egyszer parizs, egyszer new orleans. rengeteg utazas. rengeteg kemeny melo es nagyszeru emlekek. kozben lassan, de biztosan szet is hullott par dolog korulottem. kicsit olyan, mintha egy evtized porgott volna le egy ev alatt. most erzem csak igazan h mennyire megvaltoztatott ez az ev. 

egyszerre gyulolom es szeretem. amikor a szabadsag, a magany, a siker es a kudarc, a boldogsag es a csalodas ilyen toxikus koktelokban vegyul benned. amikor egyszerre vagy kurva boldog es vegtelenul frusztralt es depressziv. amikor egyszerre vagy elkepesztoen proaktiv es kiegett. az egesz nagyon sok. nagyon jo, de nagyon szar. biztos minden ev ilyen volt eddig, csak nem volt ennyi stimulus. es ennyire surun. 

erdekes h mennyire nem tud orulni az ember akkor, amikor bar nagyon sok mindent eler, de nagyon sok mindent el is basz. biztos tok konnyu lenne csak a jo dolgokra koncentralni, de hat az ember megiscsak kelet-europainak szuletett. es hat mikor ne lenne hu onmagahoz, ha nem epp akkor, amikor a szar dolgokat kell tuldimenzionalni es ezzel keseruve tenni a kurva jo dolgokat is.
